The Habit Trap

Life is demanding. Modern life even more so. The majority of people are fully engaged in keeping up with life from the minute we awake until we go to sleep. Jobs, family, money, bills. With this constant whirlwind taking up our mindspace, it is difficult for anyone to set aside time to think about weightier philosophical topics.

Only major life events seem to precipitate introspection. Major illness, death, depression. And for some, even that isn’t enough.

So instead we rely on habits to get us through the day. It’s easy and safe.

The problem of course, is that we don’t really understand where our habits come from and how easily they can be shaped to suit other people’s purposes.
